Details of IMF accord being withheld

PLD presidential pre-candidate Jaime David Fern?ndez Mirabal is claiming that the authorities are concealing details of the likely effects on the public resulting from an IMF accord, and implored that they publicize such documents as the IMF?s letter of intention. According to Fern?ndez Mirabal, certain details were being withheld so as not to affect the President?s re-election campaign. Speaking at an election rally in the southwestern town of Neiba, the former Vice President (1996-2000) predicted that major sacrifices such as increases in highway tolls, gasoline prices, ITBIS (value-added tax) to 15%, airport exit taxes and vehicle tax lay ahead. He warned that the measures would be phased so as to favor the President?s re-election plans. In a PRSC rally in San Pedro de Macor?s yesterday, presidential candidate Eduardo Estrella stated that he was against an agreement with the IMF and the dollarization of the economy.
