Senate to seek solution to JCE crisis

Senate president Andres Bautista has called senators to a meeting to discuss methods of resolving the current deadlock in the Central Electoral Board (JCE). In the latest salvo in his campaign, JCE president Ram?n Morel Cerda has made serious accusations regarding the qualifications, nepotism and alleged corruption of eight of the JCE judges, asking them to explain to the public how they spent a sum of RD$204 million in three months. The Senate will meet tomorrow to take a stance on Morel Cerda?s allegations, in reaction to calls from civil, political and business sectors that they help resolve the fracas. This move suggests that Morel Cerda?s statements are being taken seriously and might lead to investigations into the affairs of some judges. Opposition politicians have attacked Morel Cerda, accusing him of ?misconduct? and calling for his dismissal.
Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch pointed to the complicity of Morel Cerda with the corruption he only now denounces. Morel Cerda has been head of the JCE for the past five years.
