The tense situation that exists in the heart of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) has prompted the Senate to recommend calling in Monsignor Agripino N??ez Collado, the rector of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra, as a mediator. According to a report in El Caribe, Senate Finance Committee Chairman C?sar D?az Filpo (PRD-Azua) and PLD spokesperson Senator Tom?s P?rez have each suggested recruiting Monsignor N??ez to arbitrate the crisis at the JCE, which otherwise might ?endanger? the upcoming presidential election.
For their parts, the judges have remained silent. The president of the JCE, Manuel Ram?n Morel Cerda, made an appearance at his office but did not talk to reporters. The other judges on the board cancelled their meeting with Morel and said they would answer to any comments from Morel Cerda at the general assembly set for Wednesday.
