Need for moral education

The Diario Libre reports that barely 30% of our schools? teachers are giving classes in Morality and Civics, despite the fact that since 2000, the subject has been part of the compulsory curriculum in all primary and secondary schools. A study released by the PUCMM university shows that 82% of the 976 of the school staff interviewed didn?t even know that the program existed, and 70% did not know that there was an ordinance that assigned scheduling of the class. The study included 859 teachers and 117 support personnel in nearly 1,000 urban elementary and middle schools in areas of high population density. The study singles out the curious fact that 80% of the teachers who participated had specialized training in areas considered to be linked to the class on Morals and Civics. There were 512 teachers who earned degrees in Social Studies, 131 had studied Primary Education, 35 had studied Counseling and 7 had graduated in Religion. The study was carried out in August 2002 and included 34 motivational workshops carried out by the PUCMM and the Civic Education Consortium.
