PRSC presidential candidate Eduardo Estrella asked President Hip?lito Mej?a to put aside his political activism and concentrate on finding solutions to national problems. He also urged that the judges of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) act with good sense to resolve their internal differences. The presidential aspirant for the PRSC expressed his support of the request made by the president of the National Council of Businessmen (CONEP), Elena Viyella, who said that government officers should resign if they are going to be actively campaigning. ?This is a moment when the government in its totality should have all its attention centered on solving the serious national problems; that is what is priority,? stated Estrella, as reported in Hoy newspaper. ?I have said on many occasions that the government officers, most of them, do not pay attention to the problems of the various towns. It is shameful that you only see them in those towns for their campaigning, while thousands of Dominicans live in extreme poverty.?
Speaking yesterday at the American Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Viyella also called for a political truce to allow the country to organize and build trust, as well as to be able to restore institutional and economic order.
The Electoral Law restricts campaigning to 90 days prior to the election date. At present, those seeking the PRD?s presidential nomination include many government ministers who have already been actively promoting their intentions.
