Enriquillo Reyes, the president of the Justice Commission of the Senate, says that President Hip?lito Mej?a needs congressional approval to deploy Dominican troops to Iraq, as reported in El Caribe newspaper. Although the PRD holds a majority in the Senate, it would nevertheless require the vote of the PRSC and PLD in the Chamber of Deputies. The PLD legislators have rejected the promise made by Mej?a to send 300 troops to accompany similar symbolic forces from Central American countries, such as Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. The soldiers would travel to Iraq to assist with land-mine removal and other health-related works.
