Nicaraguan fugitives living in the DR

The Dominican Republic is a haven for Nicaraguan former government officials who escape justice on charges of corruption. It appears that a loophole in Nicaraguan law makes it difficult for extradition proceedings to be brought against suspects in the DR, and this has led several top associates of disgraced former Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman to seek refuge here. Among these are Aleman?s private secretary, the housing minister and the telecommunications director, all wanted for serious charges of fraud in their home country. Nicaragua plans to ask for their extradition nevertheless. According to reports in the Nicaraguan press, the three ex-officials were brought into the country on a private plane belonging to Dominican businessman Abraham Selman, who had business dealings with the former President currently under house arrest in Nicaragua.
