According to a front-page story by Santiago Gonz?lez of Hoy, the egg and poultry producers in La Vega are planning to stage a protest at which they will give away 10,000 baby chicks and more than 30,000 fertile eggs because the producers are not able to use them. The producers invited the public to meet at the Arenoso Bridge to pick up their eggs and chicks. According to the story, the apparent source of the discontent is the fact that the smaller producers have not had access to the preferential exchange rate of RD$25 to US$1 that the agribusiness poultry combines have enjoyed.
