TV censorship?

A regional television program was ordered off the air by authorities because of its criticism of the President. Channel 10?s ?Frente al Pueblo? is produced and presented in the south-western provincial capital of San Juan de la Maguana by journalist Jos? Manuel Adames S?nchez, who is also a PRD municipal official. The governor of San Juan, Faruk Garib Arbaje, ordered the shut-down of the program, saying it was ?detrimental to the image? of President Hip?lito Mej?a and certain other members of his government. The measure provoked protests in the regional capital and on a national level as well, with the main journalists? union (CDP) and other press workers? associations voicing strong criticism of the decision that they feel goes against laws that protect freedom of expression. A large group of journalists was joined by members of the public to demonstrate against the order outside the San Juan de la Maguana governor?s office. CDP president Oscar L?pez Reyes there called on the governor to examine the correct legal channels. Adames S?nchez attributed the decision to remove the program from the airwaves to his support for the presidential aspirations of Senator Ram?n Alburquerque and his rejection of the PRD internal movement campaigning for Mej?a?s re-election, the PPH. He also broadcast the anti-re-election speeches by Hatuey Decamps, which featured footage of deceased PRD leader Jos? Francisco Pe?a G?mez outlining his opposition to presidential re-election and ending with the uncompromising statement that ?the people will not stand for this government?s policies of hunger and poverty.?
