President Hip?lito Mej?a has added his voice to those of Hatuey Decamps critics, saying he would give him ?a beating? at the party convention. President Mej?a is also quoted in Hoy newspaper saying that the words of Decamps against his reelection aspirations are but ?winds that do not topple plantains.?
The internal PRD mediation committee has been finding it very difficult to re-establish harmony within the party, according to member Tirso Mej?a Ricart. Former President Salvador Jorge Blanco has withdrawn from the mediation committee, after coming out in support of the President?s bid for a second term of office. Mej?a Ricart met with Hatuey Decamps to discuss the rift between him and the President, and despite the apparent discord was said to be willing to engage in discussions aimed at reconciliation. List?n Diario reports that the mediation had not failed, despite Jorge Blanco?s departure, and that the committee, which also includes Peggy Cabral and Tony Raful, was continuing its work as normal.
For her part, Vice President and pre-candidate Milagros Ort?z Bosch yesterday urged party members to be more careful about what they say, in a reference to Guido G?mez Mazara?s abrasive attack on Hatuey Decamps. Miguel Guerrero?s opinion column in El Caribe says that the internal divisions in the PRD and the PRSC have brought the parties ?to the edge of a precipice without having anyone capable of bringing the bitter disputes to an end.?
