American seeks to defend its turf

American Airlines is advertising a US$150 one-way fare to New York and US$108 one-way fare to Miami. The new advertised AA fares are considerably down from the US$500-US$700 fares the airline had available on the routes just weeks ago. The AA announcement comes shortly after new upstarts Air Santo Domingo (New York) and LanDominicana (Miami) announced new flights to these destinations. AA reminds travelers they will receive Advantage points for flying the market leading carrier.
Aeromar, which began as a cargo carrier prior to seeking the passenger market, is the longest standing Dominican airline of recent years, and is also offering promotional fares.
LanDominicana, the LanChile affiliate, is throwing in a free car rental with Hertz for their US$258 return fare.
Air Santo Domingo was best known for its domestic flights for several years, until building a good international reputation with its popular Herrera-San Juan flights. Alex Santana, who was general manager for Continental in the Dominican Republic for many years, is the general manager for Air Santo Domingo.
