Although very rare, tornadoes can occur, as evidenced yesterday in the municipality of Pedro Corto in the province of San Juan de la Maguana. In this valley nestled between the Central and Neiba mountain ranges in the Southwest,
the tornado destroyed 65 houses and left hundreds more open to the elements. Governor Garip Arbaje headed the organization of rescue work, using brigades from the National Institute for Housing (INVI) to repair and re-roof the damaged buildings. Zinc
roofing sheets could be found half a kilometer away. Assistance has also been provided by the San Juan de la Maguana municipal council. No deaths or injuries were reported.
