Perico Ripiao pleases crowds

The first Dominican movie to capture local audiences was Nueba Yol, directed
by the same Angel Mu?iz who now brings us Perico Ripiao. With so many Dominicans
either crossing the ocean themselves or distanced from family members living
abroad, the movie, in spite of its simplicity, broke box-office records here.
Now, Perico Ripiao is forecast to reap RD$75 million in sales, and is filling
local movie houses with those eager to see on the big screen much of the same
brand of humor that has been going strong on TV for over 25 years. Perico Ripiao
stars Manolo Ozuna, Raymond Pozo and Phillip Rodriguez. With its PG rating, it
is showing at the largest number of movie houses in Santo Domingo. Reviews have
been mostly favorable, and the film is a refreshing critique of the military and
current events in the Dominican Republic.
