The political committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) publishes today
a full-page advertisement comparing foreign debt taken on by Dominican
governments since 1962.
Presidents & debt upon leaving office:
Rafael Bonnelly (Uni?n C?vica – January-December 1962): US$13 million;
Juan Bosch (PRD – December 1962-September 1963): US$4 million;
Donald Reid (Triumvirato – 1963-April 1965: US$154 million;
Joaqu?n Balaguer (PRSC – 1966-1978): US$844 million;
Antonio Guzm?n (PRD – 1978-1982): US$2.9 billion;
Salvador Jorge Blanco (PRD – 1982-1986): US$3.8 billion;
Joaquin Balaguer (PRSC – 1986-1996): US$4 billion;
Leonel Fern?ndez (PLD – 1996-2000): US$3.7 billion;
Hip?lito Mej?a (PRD 2000-2004): US$7.6 billion.
The PLD propaganda division concludes: ?As a consequence of this madness, now we
must borrow to pay debts as we create new taxes to continue paying more debts.?
