Headline news in all of today’s press is the classification of the Dominican women’s volleyball team for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, this summer. The team defeated the previously unbeaten Peruvians three sets to none (25-20, 25-18, and 25-21) to secure their trip to Greece. Previously, the Dominican women had defeated the host Venezuelan team and then the team from Argentina. Setter Francia Jackson and spikers Milagros Cabral and Yudelkis Bautista were the stars of the game. The coach of the women’s team, Cuban Jorge Garvey, praised his players for their teamwork and dedication. This was the last chance for the Dominican winners of the gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Games to make the Olympics. As the Pan American champions, the Dominican Republic joined Brazil, the United States and Cuba as one of the women’s teams of the Americas to book a berth at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
