Bello Rosa urges PRD to get its act together

Former Attorney General Virgilio Bello Rosa urged that legislators ignore the bill to reform the electoral law. In an interview with Hoy newspaper, the PRD leader said that the presentation and approval of the bill would be “to pull the hair of the citizenry”, given the proximity of the elections at less than 85 days away. The proposed changes would create completely new game rules for the elections. “I would like legislators to take this into consideration and not lend themselves to these changes. Institutions are to be respected and one cannot, for convenience or circumstance, be making changes to the laws,” he said. In his opinion, “All the PRD, including the legislators and President Hipolito Mejia, should obligate the leaders of the PRD to reach an agreement that would abort this initiative.” He feels the issue is not whether the government has majority in the Senate or Chamber of Deputies. He stated in the interview at Hoy newspaper, that “Politics has its rules, and these cannot be violated just because one has the majority.” He says to do so, the people will seek their revenge on the party at election time. Bello Rosa believes that the re-election efforts are having an influence on the plummeting value of the peso.
