The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco (PRD), postponed a study of the changes sought by the PRD deputies in the Electoral Law 275-95 until Thursday, despite the fact that on Monday, Eligio Jaquez, the coordinator of the PPH faction of the PRD promoting President Mejia’s re-election, along with bill author Tirso Mejia Ricart, and Tomas Hernandez, the administrator of the Dominican Agrarian Institute, visited the deputies to lobby for the prompt study of the bill. The “Coctelera” column in Hoy newspaper says the bill is likely to pass with the eventual support of a majority of PRSC deputies, who have been notably obliging to the Mejia administration so far. El Caribe reports that Mejia agreed with his opponents for the PRD presidential nomination within the party not to sign the bill into law, once approved in Congress, unless the Supreme Court of Justice gives its favorable opinion. The new bill presented by Mejia Ricart sought to omit items from the original bill that would have made it a breach of the Constitution.
