United States President George W Bush’s new proposal to legalize the status of illegal immigrants working in that country will benefit thousands of undocumented Dominican workers, according to Dominican ambassador to Washington, Hugo Guiliani Cury. The new proposal announced by President G W Bush earlier this week will enable illegal workers to register and pay a small fee, in return for which they would receive similar rights and benefits to documented workers. These would also be able to travel to and from the United States without being denied re-entry. Ambassador Guiliani, in an interview with the Listin Diario, urges that the Dominicans living in the United States lobby so that Dominicans can secure the temporary work permits. Guiliani estimates that 1.2-1.4 million Dominicans live in the United States and Puerto Rico. Of these, he believes that less than 10% are illegal residents. He estimated that 66% travel to the DR at least once a year and thus keep close ties with the nation.
