Techie stuff

Two high-tech items did capture the country’s interest this past weekend. Hoy carried a full-page article on computer viruses, especially in relation to the NT Authority virus. The article carries excellent information on how to successfully fight this virus, which likes to attack users of Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems.

Even more exciting for techies is the announcement by Codetel that Wi-Fi is now available at three locations in Santo Domingo. The PUCMM, INTEC and Plaza Acropolis have been equipped to handle Flash Mobile Wi-Fi by Codetel. According to Benigno Gonzalez, the Wi-Fi connection at these three locales will be 15 times faster than Codetel Flash and 71 times faster than dial-up. Wireless Fidelity, while not new to the Dominican Republic as several private users exist already, is now available to the general public for the first time. If a person’s Palm or laptop does not have the necessary Wi-Fi card integrated, one can be obtained at Codetel locations around the capital city. Access to this program is available to Codetel flash users for no additional charge, but subscribers need to request a username and password from the company.
