Electoral bill seeks to divert attention

PLD deputy Abel Martinez said on Miguel Guerrero’s CDN morning talk show that the electoral reform proposal is but another of the political games the PRD plays. He said that the bill has rerouted the attention of the nation away from more pressing problems, such as the RD$50-to-US$1 rate of exchange and the calamitous economic situation, thus giving respite to the present administration, which has denied its authorship of the proposal, although it would not oppose it. Martinez explained that the PLD opposes the bill, not because it is unsure that PLD candidate Leonel Fernandez has sufficient votes to win, with or without electoral reform, but because of the threat of upsetting the upcoming election. He said that the bill seeks to create chaos in the Dominican Republic and in the electoral process, with only weeks to go before the election. He commented on the fact that the currently held electoral law establishes that each candidate is to be represented by two delegates in the polling station, each with the right to impugn the results. He points to the chaos that would stem from problems claimed by the delegates if they are increased to the proposed five per party, even if the ruling PRD party is the only one to field so many candidates.
