The president of the Administrative Chamber of the Central Electoral Board, Judge Nelson Gomez, says there are 5,065,000 Dominicans registered to vote in the 16 May election. He expects the total able to vote in the election to reach 5,070,000 when more expatriate voters are listed. According to the initial July 2003 results from the 2002 Census, the population in the Dominican Republic is 8,715,602, of which 33.6% are under 14 years. In the 2000 Presidential election, 4,251,218 Dominicans were eligible to vote, so the 2004 JCE total registered voters is up 20%.
