Cardinal to Subero: “Persevere”

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez celebrated mass at the Santo Domingo Cathedral yesterday, and made the Subero Isa affair a central part of his sermon. He said that the chief justice should resist pressure to resign and instead entrench himself in his post. Lopez Rodriguez said that the PPH had no business interfering in this matter, and that Dominicans were becoming too accustomed to this type of abuse. The Cardinal prayed that there would be some easing of the economic crisis, and called on politicians to abandon their personal ambitions and partisan rivalry, by dedicating themselves to serving the nation and fighting corruption, poverty and “partisan interests that destroy and corrupt.” He likened the divisions in Dominican public life to the Tower of Babel and said that, despite all the problems, “the nation must not despair.”

Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez urged Subero to persevere. “The PPH does not have to get involved. There is independence of powers, and the PPH is not a power: The Supreme Court of Justice must be respected and no one should get involved in that.” In his opinion, under no circumstance should Subero resign, and the pressures must be stopped, as they only complicate things further, he said in mass at the Cathedral yesterday.
