Former President Salvador Jorge Blanco has announced that the official designation of President Hipolito Mejia as the PRD Presidential candidate will take place on 31 January. He attributed the delay to a meeting of delegates scheduled for 25 January, denying that it was to allow time for some agreement that might permit other Presidential hopefuls like Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch and Rafael Subervi Bonilla to stand in the 16 May election. One other announcement that is believed to be on the cards is the removal of Hatuey Decamps from the party presidency. According to some sources, the PRD statutes establish that the president of the party must endorse the Presidential candidate, which Decamps, as a staunch opponent of Presidential re-election, is unlikely to do.
