Licey are the Champs

The Tigres del Licey, one of the original baseball teams in the Dominican Republic, renewed its title as the winningest team in the country after defeating the upstart Gigantes del Cibao 11-3 in the fifth game of the final playoffs. Licey has now won 18 titles compared to 17 for the Aguilas Cibaenas from Santiago. The 2003-2004 tournament was dedicated to Dominican Harry Carey, don Bullo Steffani, the renowned sports broadcaster from Santiago. Henry Rodriguez, who plays for the Chicago Cubs in the National League, was voted MVP of the Final Series. Seven runs in the first inning sealed the title for Licey, as four pitchers limited the Giants from San Francisco de Macoris to just five hits. The Giants, in their first final series ever, looked tired after previously defeating the Aguilas Cibaenas in a demanding, four-game series. The infield for Licey, an array of major leaguers such as Jose Offerman, D’Angelo Jimenes, Ronnie Belliard and Luis Castillo, along with a potent offense provided by Henry Rodriguez among others, foiled the Giants’ pitching. Approximately 22,000 screaming fans in the Quisqueya Baseball Park added to the momentum. Now Licey will scour the other teams’ rosters for players such as Bartolo Colon, David Ortiz and former American League MVP Miguel Tejada to bolster their roster for the upcoming Caribbean World Series.
