The family of a minor who was allegedly raped by former priest Domingo Espinal has decided to pursue its case. Newspaper reports say the family turned down offers of full scholarships for the boy and a family home from the government in exchange for their dropping the charges. Lawyer Tomas Castro, who represents the family, disputes the decision of Attorney General Victor Cespedes whereby the former priest was absolved from responsibility. The family took the case through the court system this time, requesting a new investigation into the sexual misconduct of Espinal. The family had originally placed the claim before the Department for Children and Adolescents of the Attorney General’s Office. The lawyer says that there is a report from the Forensic Pathology Department that proves the then 14-year-old child was raped, supporting the interrogations conducted by police. The family also says the priest, who worked as director of a Catholic school located at Km. 10 of Prolongacion Independencia Avenue, also sexually abused a cousin of the raped child. El Caribe reports that the priest continues to hold the rank of lieutenant colonel in the army and has said mass at the Presidential Palace church in the past.
