Blackouts cause traffic chaos

El Caribe reports that the long-lasting blackouts are producing a level of traffic chaos previously unseen in the Dominican Republic. A total of 640 agents from AMET were dispatched to handle the traffic flow. The 27 of February Avenue, one of the principle thoroughfares in Santo Domingo, became a ten-mile long parking lot as the traffic lights stood idle and the AMET agents were being called to duty. The area around Gazcue, Ciudad Nueva and the Zona Universitaria became completely tied up at around 10am. The traffic crisis became so severe that the 40 recruits being trained for the traffic force were pressed into urgent service.
