PRD factions clash

The newspapers are reporting a series of altercations that took place outside the PRD’s headquarters on Ave. Bolivar in the capital’s Gazcue district. The offices have been occupied by a group of around 500 party activists who are strongly opposed to President Hipolito Mejia’s re-election. They seek to prevent the newly-proclaimed PRD president, Vicente Sanchez Baret, from taking over the running of the party headquarters, which have been under the management of ousted party president Hatuey Decamps. PRD Deputy Felipa Gomez is at the center of the action, holed up inside the party’s command center, reportedly accompanied by several armed PRD activists. One party supporter, Juan Galvez, has already been shot in the vicinity of the party HQ, apparently following an argument with a fellow activist of a rival faction of the party. Speaking yesterday, Vicente Sanchez Baret vowed that there would be no violence and did not exclude the option of setting up a new office at an alternate location.
