Ana Mitila Lora in the Listin Diario writes about the results of the Penn, Schoen and Berland poll which gives PLD candidate Leonel Fernandez a crushing majority in May’s Presidential election. Leonel’s 65% versus Hipolito’s 13% demonstrates the public’s rejection of the current government and the economic situation. “The public does not forgive the loss of its purchasing power nor the deterioration of state institutions: Mejia is as much a victim of a protest vote as Leonel is its beneficiary.” Lora quotes Hoy journalist Noris Sanchez, who pronounced that what some former PRD voters will never forgive Mejia for is the fact that “he forced them to vote for Fernandez.” As in so many previous elections, Dominicans will vote for the candidate they dislike least, rather than a candidate they support. She warns the PLD “not to go overboard with arrogance,” and encourages them to propose some concrete solutions, instead of making empty statements. “The people deserve a campaign with content. Enough of offering the sky, only to send us into hell. Enough of demagoguery,” says Lora.
