Two soldiers killed at border

Two Dominican soldiers were killed at their post in the village of La Vigia, just to the north of the Customs station on the Haitian frontier. They were part of the Tenth Infantry Battalion, which is guarding that part of the border. Press coverage did not, however, link the action to the desperate situation in Haiti. According to Hoy, the Army Chief of Staff, Major General Jorge Zorrilla Ozuna, said that investigations as to whether or not Haitians were responsible for the double homicide have not been concluded. According to what is known, the attackers sneaked up on the soldiers, hit them on the head and shot them at close-range. The Listin Diario said that Zorrilla Ozuna revealed that a possible motive for the crime was to obtain the soldiers’ weapons. President Hipolito Mejia, arriving in Dajabon just 15 minutes after the incident was discovered, ordered the arrest and jailing of those responsible, calling them “Haitian conspirators.” Mejia stated that during his government there would be no disrespect for Haitian democracy nor towards the Haitian people. The latest attack raises the number of Dominican military personnel killed or wounded while in service on the frontier to six.
