As reported in the Listin Diario, Danilo Medina, strategic coordinator of the PLD’s electoral campaign, considered the spread between the voters’ preference for Leonel Fernandez over Hipolito Mejia is so wide that it will make any attempt at fraud in the May election difficult. A recent Penn Schoen poll showed Fernandez winning in a first round with 65% of the vote, versus 13% for Mejia. Medina said that independently of what he called the “fraud vocation” of the PPH faction of the PRD and the partialities of the JCE judges, the polls indicated that come May there will not be any “little sticks” that would make a difference because the population has already chosen to vote for Leonel Fernandez. By “little sticks”, Danilo Medina was referring to the conversion of the numeral 20 to 120 during the 2002 congressional elections, which gave unwarranted votes to several candidates.
