Power situation to improve?

This morning’s newspapers provide reassurance for those suffering the effects of the prolonged power outages that have plagued the country over the last few weeks. Finance Minister Rafael Calderon announced that the electricity supply should start to improve substantially as from this weekend. The deficit in the power sector has continued to hover around the 50% mark, according to the power generation and distribution companies. Calderon explained, however, that the payments made to the power companies several days ago were being used for the purchase of new fuel supplies, due to arrive in the country today. The Haina, Itabo and AES generating stations would be back in action this weekend, the minister told reporters at the National Palace yesterday.
