Lots of Dominicans

The Census Office finally released some good figures over the weekend and now we know that there are 8.56 million of us on the island. According to HOY, the heaviest concentration of the population is located in Santo Domingo, where there are 2.73 million people. The north-central area is second, with 1.44 million people. Population growth was calculated at just 1.79%, depicting a significant drop from the 2.17% in 1993 or the 2.98% reported in 1981. There are 14,000 more women than men in the general population, and there are 5.145 million people over the age of 18. The Dominican population in the first census of 1920 accounted for just 894,665 inhabitants, who by 1935 had multiplied to 1.479 million. In 1950 there were slightly over 2 million. Between 1950 and 1960 the population grew at a rate of 3.61%, reaching 3,047,070 people. Generally speaking, the Dominican population doubles every thirty years.
