Diario Libre publishes today the results of a nationwide Gallup poll, conducted 18-22 February, of eligible voters for the 16 May presidential election. The results confirm the findings of a Penn Schoen survey published in January that showed former President Leonel Fernandez with a 65% lead.
According to Gallup, if the election were held today, 63.1% would vote for former President Leonel Fernandez of the PLD, and 14.9% would vote for PRSC candidate Eduardo Estrella, a former senator for Santiago and public works minister during the Balaguer administration. President Hipolito Mejia, the PRD’s candidate, ranks third with 14.6% of the vote. The poll revealed that only 4.5% were undecided, while 2.9% said they would not vote at all. In the Dominican Republic a candidate needs 50%+1 vote to win an election in a first round. If not, the two top candidates must participate in a second round of voting held in June.
