The Chamber of Deputies elected PRSC’s Deputy Victor (Ito) Bisono to the National Council of the Magistrate, the board that chooses the members of the Supreme Court of Justice. Bisono was elected with a vote of 125 deputies present during the session. El Caribe newspaper explains that the council could be convened to decide on changes in the makeup of the Supreme Court of Justice. Only two weeks ago, PRSC Senator German Castro Garcia was appointed to the same council to represent the Senate. Other members are President Hipolito Mejia (PRD), Senate head Jesus Vasquez (PRD) and president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Judge Jorge Subero Isa.
The Supreme Court of Justice must appoint another judge to the council and the PLD is not represented. During the session, the present composition of the Supreme Court of Justice under Subero Isa was criticized. El Caribe points out that PRD deputies favored replacing Subero Isa with Judge Rafael Luciano. Ricardo Taveras, of the Fuerza Nacional Progresista (FNP), a PLD ally, mentioned that since the Supreme Court judges were renewed in 1997, the Supreme Court has only undergone changes once. The Supreme Court must soon rule on several issues related to the 16 May Presidential election and which could affect its outcome.
