Cogentrix to produce 300MW

The financial officer of the San Pedro de Macoris Electric Company (Cogentrix), Leonel Mesa, announced on Saturday that his facility would increase its output to 300 megawatts of energy during the first weeks of March. Mesa told reporters from the Listin Diario that the boost would be possible because the new turbines for Unit III had arrived. At the same time, Mesa announced that the majority partners, Goldman Sachs & Co, 65% owners of the Cogentrix facility, are now open to offers for its sale. At present time, the Cogentrix generators are providing 195 MW to the electrical system. When Bredyg A Disla, of the Listin Diario, asked about the relations between the government and Cogentrix, Mesa said that last 29 January the government paid nearly US$16 million on its accumulated debt of US$38 million. He added that last Friday another payment obligation of US$3.2 million was not made. At the time of the Cogentrix announcement, the CDEEE was awaiting the entry of the Itabo coal-fired unit, which produces 220 MW, and the AES-Andres natural gas unit, which provides 280 MW of power, to the national power system.
