A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that arrived in the country last week suggested tighter fiscal controls over the electoral process, all the while maintaining that the country was fulfilling its obligations in relation to the economic recovery program. The IMF mission met with President Mejia over breakfast at his residence. Anoop Singh headed the IMF team as director of the Department for the Western Hemisphere, and was joined by Jose Fagembaum, Stevens Philips and Ousmend Mandeng. In his statement to the press, as reported by Hoy, Singh said that this election period “requires the application of more fiscal controls, as well as monetary, but what we have seen tells us that this is being done.” Also at the President’s house were Finance Minister Rafael Calderon and Central Bank Governor Jose Lois Malkun. Earlier, the IMF team met with PLD candidate Leonel Fernandez and PRSC candidate Eduardo Estrella, as well as the heads of both chambers of Congress.
