Cabinet changes

President Hipolito Mejia replaced several of his cabinet members to allow them to dedicate themselves fully to his re-election campaign. These include Miguel Vasquez, former director of migration who was named minister sans portfolio, and special assistant to the President and Customs Director Vicente Sanchez Baret, who was recently appointed president of the ruling PRD party. The Agricultural Ministry will now be headed by Jose Antonio Gabelo, to replace Eligio Jaquez, who is one of the top proponents of the Mejia campaign. The position of customs director is now held by Alexis Henriquez (brother-in-law of Sanchez Baret) and Eduardo Rodriguez was appointed deputy operational director of customs, a post previously held by Henriquez. The new director of migration is Siquio Ng de la Rosa. La Vega’s mayor, Fabio Ruiz, has been appointed to head the Plan Renove. Ricardo Ayanes, formerly the deputy legal advisor to the President, has been named legal advisor, to replace Guido Gomez Mazara, who also resigned to dedicate himself full-time to the political campaign.
