Merengue star Miriam Cruz was chosen for the role of “Evita” in the musical that is scheduled for 25-27 June presentations at the National Theater in Santo Domingo. Cruz will star alongside Carlos Alfredo Fatule (Ernesto “Che” Guevara) and Jose Lora (Checho) as Juan Domingo Peron in the Amaury Sanchez production. The musical tells the story of Eva Duarte, the charismatic second wife of Argentinean dictator Juan Domingo Peron. Born to a very poor family, by 27 she had become first lady and the most powerful woman in Argentina. She died of cancer in 1952, when she was barely 33 years old. The original creators of the musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (also of Jesus Christ Superstar fame), granted Sanchez copyright authorization to produce the Dominican version. Sanchez last year successfully presented a Dominican version of Jesus Christ Superstar at the National Theater.
