President Hipolito Mejia dared lawyers representing Ramon Baez Romano, the former president of the collapsed Baninter finance and media group, to release whatever information they wish surrounding the case. Yesterday, the press published the comments of lawyer Vinicio Castillo Seman, who said that Mejia should be more cautious with his words since his current status as Presidential candidate was made possible through constitutional reform obtained through large amounts of money from the now-defunct bank. The lawyer said they were in possession of documents that, if made public, would lead to the arrest of a large part of the PPH faction that supports Mejia?s re-election campaign. Among those mentioned by the lawyer were Eligio Jaquez, Mejia?s campaign director, Ana Maria Acevedo and National Treasurer Pastora Fondeur. The Baninter debacle has recently become a campaign issue, with Mejia accusing Fernandez of not having acted on his knowledge of the rampant irregularities in the bank?s operations.
