Military statistics

Investigative reporter Ana Mitila Lora writes in her column in today?s Listin Diario that in 1961 there were 12,000 military and that experts at the time considered them too many. As of 15 August 2000, the DR had 18 major generals and 50 brigadier generals, or 68 generals total ? not 23 as reported by the Diario Libre in early April that sparked the current debate. Today, there are 51 major generals and 140 brigadier generals ? or 123 more than there were previously. To get an accurate number of generals in the DR, approximately 50 generals from the National Police ranks must also be included. There are around 40,000 military members and 26,000 police agents in the country.
