Empowering the press

The Senate approved the second reading on a bill that would oblige government departments to release information to the press. The bill presented by Senator Jose Tomas Perez (PLD-National District) seeks to increase the power of the press and put a stop to corruption in government. It now needs approval from the Chamber of Deputies to become a law. The bill specifically establishes that any person has the right to request and receive complete information, in a truthful and timely fashion, from any Dominican government department or entity, or decentralized government entities, including private companies that have state participation.
