In a scenario very similar to that in the United States, El Caribe shows how the Presidential candidates are concentrating their efforts on those areas that will ultimately decide the outcome of the election. The regions of the Central Cibao Valley (Santiago, Moca, La Vega and San Francisco de Macoris), Puerto Plata, San Cristobal, San Juan de la Maguana, San Pedro de Macoris and the outlying areas of Santo Domingo together hold 70% of all registered voters. For this reason, these are the areas in which the hopefuls are directing their attentions. In the triangle formed by Santiago, Sanchez Ramirez (Nagua) and Monsenor Nouel (Bonao) resides nearly 30% of the electorate. The area around the capital city of Santo Domingo contains 32% of the voters. Four provinces and the National District hold 53% of the voters.
