Here they go again

A bill to unify the congressional and presidential elections is being tossed about by legislators again. The proposal would extend the present legislators? terms for another two years. The argument against such a move is that electoral processes negatively affect society and the economy. Writing in Hoy newspaper today, Danilo Cruz Pichardo speculates on the motives for the new effort, saying that the legislators are insecure about their being re-elected by their constituencies in the 2006 election. He says the matter is not ethical, but senators and deputies should not legislate for their own gain. Cruz Pichardo suggests that the legislators consider reforming the Constitution so that the next legislators are elected for a temporary two-year period, subject to re-election in the next term. From then on, the term would be for four years. Cruz Pichardo says that if the legislators try to push the bill through during these electoral times, it will have a boomerang affect against them.
