President says he will not be pressured

President Hipolito Mejia said on TV yesterday that he will not be pressured by the Dominican College of Medics. Mejia had told the medics to submit a bill for increased taxes to Congress to pay for their demanded wage increases. Although Mejia promised to support the bill, it has not moved in Congress, leaving the physicians with the feeling they have been toyed with. For this reason, the medical staffs of the public hospital system have decided to resort again to the work stoppage tactic in order to pressure the government with the announcement of a six-day strike to coincide with the final stretch of the electoral campaign. The strike affects 173 government hospitals, including 150 of the public hospital system, and 23 of the social security system.
