The white elephants at the Pan Am Park

President Hipolito Mejia has declared he was not aware that most of the pavilions built for the Pan American Games in the Parque Mirador del Este were not being used for their designated athletic purpose. The park became off limits to the general public after it was used to build the million-dollar pavilions. Of these, however, only the Table Tennis Pavilion is active, thanks to the table tennis academy set up by Mario Alvarez Soto, where about 100 children train in the sport that has given several regional medals to the DR. Today, President Mejia gave his reaction to the comment by journalist Cuchito Alvarez Dugan of Hoy newspaper, who said the park was abandoned. Mejia requested a list of the abandoned pavilions. Today, Hoy newspaper publishes the sorry state of the handball, gymnastics, soccer and weight-lifting pavilions at the park.
