Most of us enjoy watching the sport of baseball, which is not only the national pastime of the Dominican Republic but also the source of immense wealth for many players from the poorest areas of the country. That is the pretty side of the game. Today?s Hoy reveals, however, the continuing ugly face of the game. Former big-leaguer and current trainer Mario Guerrero is pursuing civil action against Raul Mondesi (whose annual salary is US$640,000) and former major league players Geronimo Berroa (US$153,000) and Juan Guzman (US$400,000) for non-payment of services rendered. Guerrero is preparing other suits against Neifi Perez and Danny Bautista. The legal action by Guerrero that has embargoed Mondesi?s bank accounts in the Dominican Republic and the United States stems from an agreement made by Mondesi to pay Guerrero 1% of his earnings as a professional baseball player. Guerrero has already won and collected on similar suits against Tony Fernandez, Francisco Cabrera and Pat Borders. The basis for these actions is the fact that Guerrero trained all of these players before and after they reached the big leagues. In the case of Raul Mondesi, they had reached a verbal agreement, apparently before witnesses, that if Mondesi reached the Major Leagues he would pay Guerrero 1% of his salary. The case has been in the courts since 1998. As a result of this issue, Mondesi has abandoned his team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and returned to his home in the DR, telling the press he can?t concentrate on the game.
