Bulletin No. 10 of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), with all the votes from the 12,203 voting stations computed, shows that Leonel Fernandez of the PLD won Sunday?s election with 57.11% of the vote (2,063,871 votes). President Hipolito Mejia, who ran for re-election on the PRD ticket, received 33.65% (1,771,377 votes) and Eduardo Estrella of the PRSC received 8.65% (312,493 votes). The presidential candidates of eight minority parties received the remaining 0.59% of the vote.
Of the 5,020,703 citizens registered to vote, 3,656,850 (or 72.84% of the electorate) actually cast their ballots. Annulled votes accounted for 1.18% of the total.
Analysts say that, despite the high turnout, Sunday?s procedures saw the highest abstention rate for any of the past three elections. Voter dissatisfaction with the performance of their party, as indicated by the polls leading up to the election, and particularly as in the cases of the candidacy of Eduardo Estrella of the PRSC and with the performance of the PRD government in general, may have motivated many of these party?s followers to stay at home.
