The Diario Libre ?Rosca Izquierda? cartoon celebrates today the virtue of Dominican adaptability and its entrepreneurial spirit. The character Rosca, while holding up an oar with one hand and proudly showing his ?yola? or rowboat, tells his friend, who is using an umbrella to cover from the rain: ?To have success in business one has to adapt to the demands of the market.? The friend replies: ?I don?t understand, Rosca.? Then Rosca tells him: ?As the rains have been coming to this city, I will get rich with my new fleet of ?yola-conchos.? The cartoon mocks the evolution from car-conchos, to moto-conchos, and now yola-conchos ? now needed for transit in many Dominican cities plagued by the government?s delay in fixing the rain drainage systems for years.
