Fernandez on power crisis

The President-elect is reported in Hoy newspaper as saying that in the two months remaining in the current government?s term of office, the Mejia administration will not be able to solve the structural problems of the energy sector. But he said the government could mitigate the problem if it makes payments to the generators and distributors. The government has reportedly been accumulating the so-called subsidy offered to those who do not pay for the electrical service or pay low amounts, such as the disadvantaged barrios and the government itself.

Fernandez said that the electricity problems will be a top priority for his administration and he plans to contribute to a definite solution to the problem. The incoming statesman said that the long blackouts and escalating power bills reflect the sector?s present crisis. He added that if the system doesn?t collapse from here to 16 August, it will then be up to the PLD government to administer it. ?I believe this matter, until 16 August, is the responsibility of the present authorities. After the 16th, it?s up to us,? he said.
