Heavy losses in agriculture

A preliminary report from the Ministry of Agriculture states that losses to farming due to the heavy rains that fell from 23 to 25 May is estimated at RD$1.03 billion. It informs that 11% of all planted crops were affected, with the most serious damage done to plantain, rice, red bean, corn, and yucca plantations. Most damages were in the southwestern region in the provinces of Barahona, Bahoruco and Independencia. The second most affected areas were in the provinces of Duarte, Sanchez Ramirez, Maria Trinidad Sanchez and Samana in the northeast.
